This is my favorite Elseworlds Batman. The book actually started the concept of transplanting the mythology of Batman in different times and places. In Gotham by Gaslight: A Tale of the Batman, Bruce wayne begins his clandestine activities as the Bamtan in Gotham circa 1889. A series of murders similar to those committed by Jack The Ripper coincides with Batman's appearance and Bruce Wayne finds himself framed as the killer. The book is written by Brian Augustyn and illustrated by Mike Mignola with inks by P. Craig Russell. GN Comics ranked Gotham by Gaslight #13 on a list of the 25 greatest Batman graphic novels, saying that the comic is "as taut and well-conceived a graphic novel as you can find -- Elseworlds or otherwise."  This is the same figure seen in this post   but this time, by another photographer -- myself :) In my opinion, the sculpt is also one of the most faithful interpretations of the illustrated work.  This is the Crime Squad Torpedo Batman made by Kenner in 1995. The figure came with a "Transforming Techno-Torpedo Backpack." The 5" figure is part of a series of toys that is long out of production. Copy on the figure packaging: It is a dark time in Gotham. A new breed of criminal, maniacal villains with extraordinary resources and power, rules the city. The only hope lies in the hands of Gothams Caped Crime-Fighter, Batman!

In 1995, Kenner released the Crime Squad line of Batman figures based on the Batman The Animated Series cartoon. I've lost the accessories and the boxes of these toys but am keeping a close eye on the secondary market to try and complete them. Here's one of the loose, incomplete action figure singles released without the accessories, specifically the Crime Squad Piranha Blade Batman. The 5 inch action figures in the series are based on the Emmy-Award winning Batman: The Animated Series and its spin-offs. Piranha Blade Batman came with the " Transforming Techno-Shield Backpack" Comer this year's Toycon, I'll be on the lookout for these. I'm building a display case for these and will post pictures of that soon.

Gotham by Gaslight is a DC Comics one-shot by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, with inks by P. Craig Russell. It is considered to be the first Elseworlds story, where DC Comics heroes are taken out of their usual setting and put into alternate timelines or realities. Photography by Rolly Magpayo.

Knightfall is a major Batman story arc published by DC Comics  in the spring and summer of 1993.  In Knightfall, Batman is crippled by the villain Bane. Wayne is replaced as Batman by Jean-Paul Valley, formerly known as Azrael, an unconsciously trained assassin for an ancient religious order. As the new Batman, Valley  has trouble reconciling his previous programming as Azrael with his new role as Gotham's protector. He becomes increasingly violent and unstable, tarnishing Batman's reputation. Bruce Wayne realizes the error of handing over the Mantle of the Bat to Valley and decides to reclaim it. To rehabilitate his skills, Bruce asks the famed assassin Lady Shiva to retrain him. Shiva pits Bruce against several vengeful expert martial artists, making him don the Mask of the Tengu. In Japanese folklore,  tengu were disruptive demons and harbingers of war. DC Direct depicts Bruce Wayne's appearance as the Tengu with this 6" figure.

I'm currently working on a friend's S.H. MonsterArts Space Godzilla. Her son brought the toy to school and it inadvertently got disassembled. I'm reattaching the parts and am amazed and frustrated at the level of design and the articulation. What an awesome model IMHO. A bit overdesigned though but beautiful nonetheless.   posted from Bloggeroid
