April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. Its a day that has special significance for our family. My fantastic "pamangkin" (nephew) was diagnosed early with mild autism (Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified) and his parents immediately sought intervention. Early diagnosis and early intervention have done wonders for him. The various therapies that comprise his intervention are all geared to lessen the associated deficits of the disorder, reduce familial distress, and more importantly increase his quality of life and functional independence. Tomorrow, Joaquin will be graduating from kindergarten and will be joining a "bigger" school. Supporting World Autism Awareness Day helps our world know more of the autism epidemic & allows us to share vital information and experiences regarding the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention. And, just as importantly, we celebrate the unique talents and skills of persons with autism. Mark your cale
