Protoceratops

Protoceratops  is a genus of sheep-sized (1.5 to 2 m long) herbivorous ceratopsian dinosaur, from the Upper Cretaceous Period (Campanian stage) of what is now Mongolia. It was a member of the Protoceratopsidae, a group of early horned dinosaurs. Unlike later ceratopsians, however, it was a much smaller creature that lacked well-developed horns and retained some primitive traits not seen in later genera. Protoceratops had a large neck frill which was likely used as a display site to impress other members of the species.

Folklorist and historian of science Adrienne Mayor of Stanford University has suggested that the exquisitely preserved fossil skeletons of Protoceratops and other beaked dinosaurs, found by ancient Scythian nomads who mined gold in the Tian Shan and Altai Mountains of Central Asia, may have been at the root of the image of the mythical creature known as the griffin. Griffins were described as lion-sized quadrupeds with large claws and a raptor-bird-like beak; they laid their eggs in nests on the ground.

Greek writers began describing the griffin around 675 B.C., at the same time the Greeks first made contact with Scythian nomads. Griffins were described as guarding the gold deposits in the arid hills and red sandstone formations of the wilderness. The region of Mongolia and China where many Protoceratops fossils are found is rich in gold runoff from the neighboring mountains, lending some credence to the theory that these fossils were the basis of griffin myths. from Wikipedia

BBI Elite Force M1 Abrams

Just a quickie today, still got a ton of work to finish. It's a BBI Elite Force 1:18 M1 Abrams MBT! A coworker decided to streamline his collection and sold me this tank and two humvees. More pics soon when I get a chance to pose them with my G.I. Joes.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Doctor Finkelstein

Doctor Finkelstein is a resident of Halloween Town. He is the mad scientist and the "father" of Sally. He is described as a pale-as-a-sheet mad scientist with a duckbill-like mouth and a hinged skullcap that he can open up to reveal his brain. Doctor Finklestein lives in a large observatory with his living rag doll creation Sally and his hunchbacked assistant Igor. James Whale's Frankenstein is quoted in Finklestein's line "I made you with my own hands" which is ironic as Finklestein's body appears to be largely if not entirely artificial. Unlike Frankenstein who takes no responsibility for his creations and disowns them almost as soon as they are completed (much like the original Dr. Frankenstein), Finklestein takes full responsibility over Sally and acts as an over-protective father and in some ways an overbearing husband (thus explaining Sally's attempts to run away) by keeping her under lock and key under the pretext of shelterin...

Star Wars 3D Chess Set

I got this wonderful Star Wars chess set as a gift last Christmas. Its a huge set, being a bit bigger than my usual wood, traditional chess sets. The box top opens to reveal the figures mounted in a pvc shell with the board and an owner's manual behind. The set is distributed by United Labels Comicware based out in Spain but does not specify which country the components were manufactured in. Funny though that the box art features Republic Clone Troopers rather than the Imperial Stormtroopers. Call me stuck up but it gets me the same way when some people don't differentiate between Republican Roman Legions and Imperial Roman Legions. Ah, Gods of Geekery! Anyway, the set features the Galactic Empire versus the Rebel Alliance with The heroes and villains acting as the playing pieces.  Unboxing the content, you'll find the following game contents: Black (Galactic Empire) Emperor Palpatine (King) Darth Vader (Queen) Imperial Stormtrooper (Bishop) Imperial Ro...
